Apple just released a first look at its new biopic series "WeCrashed," which chronicles the meteoric rise and fall of the co-working real estate company WeWork and its eccentric ex-leader, Adam Neumann.
The Apple TV series, which dropped its official trailer on Wednesday, explores the relationship between the disgraced former CEO and his wife Rebekah Neumann, as well as their influence on the company's notorious decline.
The show is based on the Wondery podcast "WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork," and will feature Academy Award winners Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway as Neumann and his wife, respectively.
The trailer provides glimpses into Neumann's conception of the company, the couple's lavish lifestyle, tense board meetings, and the company's infamous parties and "summer camp" employee retreats.
Founded in 2010 by Neumann, WeWork eventually grew into a $47 billion unicorn centered around revolutionizing real estate and flexible workplaces. However, when the company tried to file for an IPO in 2019, it revealed troubling details about the company's culture.
An S-1 document in the filing detailed substantial money loss, with the company reportedly hemorrhaging $1.6 billion of its $1.8 billion revenue. A 2019 Wall Street Journal investigation further shed light on Neumann's hard-partying ways, and alleged drug and alcohol abuse.
As WeWork's first IPO deteriorated, the company's board of directors ousted Neumann in September 2019, before multinational conglomerate Softbank eventually took control of the company. WeWork refiled for its IPO in October 2021 through a merger with the special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) BowX Acquisition, at a more modest valuation of $9 billion.
At The New York Times' Dealbook conference in November 2021, Neumann revealed that Leto warned him not to watch the series due to its portrayal of the ex-CEO, advice Neumann said he plans on following.
